ACPI in Linux 2.6 vs 2.4 and the processor fan

The processor fan worked great in 2.4 (custom kernel, gentoo).. when i moved to 2.6, the processor fan stays on all the time..
i've tried 2.6.0,2.6.1,and 2.6.2.. All APCI kernel parts are compiled as modules.. I even tried echoing C2 > /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/power

and still the fan lives on..
Other than that.. I've been a happy camper with my ze5400 laptop... (except for that entire buying the linuxant driver to get the wireless to work)

Any ideas on how to make this fan shut up?
