Re: anti-virus software for Linux / Unix

There are quite a number of Antivirus programs available for the Linux platform.

I personally use Clam AntiVirus ( http://www.clamav.net ), an openseource antivirus implementation.

I have also used TrendMicro's products in the past ( http://www.trendmicro.com ).

AVG also has a Linux solution ( http://www.grisoft.com ), as I'm sure other major AV distributers do as well.

It depends on what you're wanting to do with it. If you only want to be able to scan your local system, then any of them will do. All three listed above have email-server protection as well. TrendMicro comes with a HTTP Proxy implementation out of the box, but there are plugins available for Clam to use with Squid etc..

Re: anti-virus software for Linux / Unix

U can use Trend Micro's Messaging security suite if it is a mail server or u can use trend micro web security suite if ur server is mainly used for web proxying.

Re: anti-virus software for Linux / Unix

clamav is the favourite choice on linux, because it is OSS as well.
ofcourse you have to ask yourself the question why you should need it, the main purpose of these scanners is looking for windows viruses (on file/mail servers ex.), but do not use it for system protection, for that purpose you need IDS', rootkit scanners and good firewall rules etc.

Re: anti-virus software for Linux / Unix

You need anti-virus software but it is to look for files that come from other operating systems.

Things which happen on unix would be the result of someone who has hacked into the system and gained unauthorized root access.

HP provides Security Containment to compartmentalize system functions that prevent hackers from unauthorized access. See http://www.hp.com/products1/unix/operating/securitycont.html This is for 11iV2. Maybe Linux has some equivalent?
