Configuring NIS

Hi there --

I would like to reconfigure our Fedora Core 2 client systems to broadcast for an NIS server rather than having them 'hard-wired' to a specific server. The idea is, if the first slave NIS server is down, an alternate would be used by the workstations. How would I configure the clients to do this? Thanks.

Re: Configuring NIS

Thanks for your reply. I had an idea and I was hoping you could provide feedback on it. When configuring the client, if I provide the NIS domain and leave the NIS server information blank, would that cause the client system to broadcast? Thanks.

Re: Configuring NIS

You should consider changin your authentication server type for security reasons.

Start a plan to migrate to NIS+ or LDAP+SSL/TLS.

Re: Configuring NIS

If I were starting over, I'd do ldap. I'm doing planning on an NIS to ldap migration anyway on a 200+ server complex.

If you don't have NIS installed, don't bother, go LDAP.

Both products are designed to accomplish your goal.

You can set up a complex with 1 master server, or two master servers that cluster and a series of slave servers to provide redundancy.

Based on the client configuration file, your clients will try to authenticate and succeed if there is any master or slave server it can communicate with.
