Display refresh rate is slow in Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 2)

Hi !

When I log into the my RH Linux WS / AS Release 3 (Taroon Update 2), my display refresh rate is very slow.

I am logging into the system using exceed 7.1 from my windows 2000 professional desktop.

If I type ls -l, the directory listing will stop in between and it will start scrolling again....

I hope you got my problem.

Thanks
Pramod

What is your network? is it in LAN or WAN. Which window manager you are using. GNOME/KDE has huge window refreshing screens which will affect network performance and will lead in the slower response over the network.

try using a minimal window manager on the server (eg: FVWM2, IceMaker etc) which are light on the network.

you can also try using VNC which supports compression.

Hope this helps,

Re: Display refresh rate is slow in Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 2)

Hi

I am using it in a LAN. I am using boh KDE and gnome. Both are giving this problem. Whereas my Hp-UX and Solaris boxes are working fine.

I am able to login into those boxes using exceed and thy are working fine. I am facing problem only with linux.

Both GNOME/KDE are not network friendly. Thats why I asked you try with some light weight window manager. Try with fvwm2 or others.

Re: Display refresh rate is slow in Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 2)

I would suggest if possible the following:

1) Make sure networking is full duplex with ethtool or mii-tool commands.
2) up2date the machine to a fully current patch set. Or maybe upgrade to ES 3 update 4.
3) Make sure your X windows manager is fully patched and up to date and the pc client networking is correct and there are no switch configuration issues contributing to this problem.

Re: Display refresh rate is slow in Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 2)

Try booting from a knoppix cd or such and see if you dont get a better result ... still slow then problem maybe on KDE/Gnome side or net work on server ... if better I would consider using Realvnc (or some sort of vnc) on the windows 2000.

I use Realvnc its work well for me and it can be passed to putty ssh I found this to be the best set up for me

http://www.realvnc.com/
you will find putty on www.tucows.com

Hope you find this usefull
