DR on Linux vs hp-ux

Hello,

On HP-UX we have our beloved Ignite utility. Is there a similar tool on Linux? How do you do DR on Linux?

Any details are appreciated.

It depends on the version. With Redhat, there is a utility to make a recovery disk (3.5")when you install. Ideally then if you lost your harddrive, you'd boot from the recovery disk, and then reload your last backup.

Re: DR on Linux vs hp-ux

Hello Elena,

I too have faced that one! I have used Symantec's Ghost to get a "golden image" of just the O.S. on Redhat version 2.1 Advancd server with the Grub bootloader. The Lilo bootloader had a problem and the tid on symantec's site explains it. We have 3 Linux server's and the 2 running 2.1 is what I did and tested it! It worked fine. I did of course have to boot up with a Windows floppy with networking enable to reach to the server holding my various images, then it went fine right after a reboot. Hope this helps!

On our site,
hpux:
- OS: ignite-ux (after every OS change + monthly)
- Apps: tar (for oracle database hotbackup daily) + fbackup for cold backup weekly.

linux:
- OS: ghost
- Apps: dump (backup data from mysqldump)

You can also use "Drive Image" to backup Linux, and burn some cd's, and a recovery floppy.

I do this on my laptop and home desktop and it works fine for both Linux and Windows on my dual-boot machines.

On Linux I know there exist 2 Open Source projects which are capable of doing disaster recovery.
