ESS modem on zt1121s

I am having serious problems getting the ESS Superlink-M modem (ES2838/2839 chipsets) to work on my HP pavilion running Suse 8.1 with kernel 2.4.19-4GB. It is a winmodem, but there are some web sites that say they can get this modem to work. One of these is http://www.wir-sind.org/poeschl/xt1000/. I attempted to follow this procedure, but then whenever I tried to communicate with the modem (using wvdial) the system crashed.

I am a linux newbie and don't have a clue what to do next.
