Fedora up2date

I seem to be updating packages, but only if I do them one or two at a time. A little red ball in the lower right of the Gnome desktop has an exclamation mark; when clicked message pops up saying "You don't seem to be registered", with option to register; which I select each time; next time, same thing, "You don't seem to be registered".

How to get the registering process to take ?? Does up2date really work ? How to determine if I'm making any progress ??

Any comments, experiences, welcome.

Thanks; Vern

Re: Fedora up2date

Looks like the registration process didn't finish. There should be a website mentioned in the fail message. Just go directly there. The registration process is by email address. I've run into problems with Fedora Cord where the registration got hung up because the email address was already used.

So I created an /etc/aliases record and used the fake addresss.

You have to keep beating on it until that message goes away. Try doing it off beak, because Red Hat purposely limits the number of silmultaneous connections. It makes paying Red Hat look good.

Just a sublte pressure tactic. I've gotten it to work, it just took persistance.

Re: Fedora up2date

Thanks Stephen; I'll keep banging on it; I notice that after a good install of a package that package is no longer in the update list. So I guess I'm doing something :o)

Re: Fedora up2date

I think if the up2date is not properly configured, you have a possible problem with using the utility. I strongly advise making it work right before using it to update your system in any but the most critical of security fixes.

Re: Fedora up2date

I'm trying up2date on my development Fedora system, haven't touched my server Fedora since we got it working.

I haven't yet found a place to configure up2date; I'll keep looking.

Re: Fedora up2date

Its on the GUI

Left click the hat(fedora)

System Tools

Fedora or Red Hat Network

Right now I'm looking at a Red Hat Box, but its a very similar interface.

Fedora has a 3 tab program that lets you configure up2date and other rhn type settings.

Re: Fedora up2date

Vernon,

When I went through my first experiences with up2date, it was suggested to me that I try 'yum' if I had issues with up2date.

I have found that doing a simple 'yum update' seems to work wonders for me. It's all command line (which improves response time) and seems to wipe out all of the same things that come up on the up2date list.

I have to admit to doing a 'yum update yum' as my first step just to make sure that I had the most current version of yum prior to doing a system wide update, but that was the only thing I did different than what was suggested.

Just a thought for you...

John

PS I can't remember for sure if the syntax was actually 'yum -update' or simply 'yum update'. You may want to check the man pages on it to be sure if you choose to try it.

Re: Fedora up2date

Thanks, Steven and John; I'll try yum; also try to configure up2date.
