take a look at the man page for sysctl
the tunable parameters are under /proc/sys... for nfile it is actually file-max
you will need to add an entry to the /etc/sysctl.conf file. Man page on sysctl.conf to get the format. Enter sysctl -a to get a list of the current kernel paramters.
this link is good: shows how to change the kernel setting in a way that sticks after reboot

Umm, Ted.. If you look a bit closer, you'll notice he says "OS 10.20", and "lisence to 32 users". He's talking about HP-UX, not Linux.
