Solution

						Not really,
If you install Oracle on a linux server, you have to purchase the license, but for mysql database, then it's free.
In fact, licensing is linked with the product, not with the platform.
I don't think that arcserve is free on linux. may the agent ?? but not the server.
hope that help
Benoit

Not all software is (license) free on linux. but mostly whatever is included in your distribution is.
That means you can use everything included with your redhat without paying licenses to redhat or whoever.
But imagine you want to run lotus notes, veritas fs or sybase on your linux box, you'll still have to pay for those products only (just like you pay for them on any other platform). The good thing is that for most of these an open alternative is available that can meet your needs (and is also free).
I don't know about arcserve, we use omniback here and the omniback agent is free anyways; so that doesn't add any costs to the total.

We have found the following a great resource for Open Source alternatives to most of our previous (and costly) products:
http://www.sourceforge.net
Among the best that we have found are a product called ARKEIA for our backups (which we have found is a superb alternative to Backup Exec) and Squid Proxy Server (once again a superb -and extremely powerful- alternative to MS Proxy Server and MS Internet Acceleration Server).
In fact the only product that we have not found an Open Source alternative for is Lotus Domino. But with the cost savings that we are making within the rest of our systems, this easily fits into our budget.
