gnome-terminal backspace ^?^?^?^?

Hi folks,

I have:

+RHAS4 (Gnome 2.8/Metacity window manager)
+A gnome-terminal
+My X server is: Xvnc running on RHAS4
+My client is: RealVNC vncviewer on Windows XP
+Regular HP PC keyboard

In this terminal running on localhost, backspace works fine.

But when I rlogin or ssh to an HP-UX system, backspace gives me: ^?^?^?^?

TERM is "xterm" on both localhost and when logged into the HP-UX system.

Output of stty is:

min = 1; intr = ^C; erase = ^H; kill = ^G;

susp = ^Z; dsusp = ^Y;

Output of xmodmap is:

How do I get good behaviour of my backspace key when logged onto HP-UX while in my gnome-terminal??

ok found it:

in the HP-UX session enter:

stty erase ^? # After erase press Backspace

That was pretty easy really

stty erase ^?

type
stty erase backspace key.
