hardware compatability

Has anyone here installed a linux distro (2.4 kernel) onto an XF-145 laptop from HP ? Possibly dual boot with XP ? How well was the hardware found ? Is the modem a winmodem ?

I'm considering picking one of these up after my Dell lease is up and I would just like to see how someone else may have faired with Linux on it...

Thanks,
Mike

Re: hardware compatability

Hello again Mike,

Does not sound like an HP product number... But HP is changinf everything at the moment, so...

You can have a look at the Linux on Laptop web site, http://www.linux-laptop.net/, if You have not done this already...

Maybe You can also have a look in the HP-HOWTO to see if similar H/W previously integrated in HP laptop is supported or not.
The Linux-Laptop HOWTO could be also helpfull.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HP-HOWTO/index.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Laptop-HOWTO.html

If this is not enough, You can go on Google and look further...

Hope this help.

Yours,

Re: hardware compatability

Looks like the xfXXX is close by hardware to zeXXX series of Pavillion as HP offers just same set of _bios_and_drivers for both series.
Some ze1110 results are here http://werg.home.worldnet.att.net/laptop.html
So, it has been tested as compatible, I guess xf should be also compatible. Anyway I will start use XF145 for Linux within a month. If you have a result (especialy negative result) before me - don't forget to report ;). It could save some bucks to me.
Doing nothing is still doing.

Re: hardware compatability

I apologize for the late delay, I had a hell of a time trying to get my user id, and ended up having to re-register. HP should provide a way to get your user id via just your email address... :(

In any case, I had seen the XF-145 at the big blue warehouse (Sams.. ) It was within a price range that my wife was confortable with (the buyer ) and it had pretty nice specs... the downside is that I'm working on Linux administration and development both professionally and as a hobby, and I would like to have a machine to do it to carry around with me.

I've checked into linux-laptop.net (THE site for linux on the laptop), and have tried to find information about the system, but I'm guessing that its quite anew system as theres not very much out there for it... I can't find it on any of the big B&M sites (Compusa.com, bestbuy.com) so I have nothing to get more information about it... hell, it's not even on samsclub.com's site..

My purchase time is still a couple of months out, when a friend comes back from basic and takes my Dell away from me... for now I have the inspiron 3500 to work on. So if you're going to be getting it, please report back how it's going... You can hit me either on this thread or via email at mccuem11@yahoo.com... I'm really anxious to hear what you have to say about it.. I've done some looking into Toshiba's as well, the 1800 line of Satellites, which look very promising... (can I say that here ?)...

Thanks for your input,
Mike

Re: hardware compatability

I've also seen that machine at Sam's. The link for it on the HP web site notebooks.hp-at-home.com, choose HP Pavilion notebook products, scroll down to Lightweight, click on the dropdown box and select the xt145, click go.
