How to backup OS (linux)

Hi All,

Customer have a HP proliant server DL380 G3, the oracle application have backup already. May I ask does OS(linux ES2.1) need back as well if need proceed Hardware RAID via ACU. If need backup and what is best method to backup ? backup to tape by use command tar or some other method? Please advice.

Yes, you need to backup the OS.

You can use 'tar', as you mentioned, but if you want something more robust, then google for "linux backup" - there are many vendors out there for backup software.

Perhaps someone in these forums has a suggested one?????

Hi

Having a good backup will always be good in case you need anything from the previous OS. tar or cpio can be used to backup,
What method did you use for backing up the database?
In any case it is better to do a fresh load of OS and restore the OS configurations files and restore the Data backup for Oracle.

You can use kickstart :)
Redhat way to get your system config and
tar for your data. You must use dump or other vendor way to archive oracle :)
I use Mondo for make boot archive :)

ether use dump / restore to a different disk, or use dump to a tape
