No you can't do it with data protector. Data protector provides DR solutions for Windows only, and it's not too good starting from Windows 2003.

Re: how to take a golden image on linux
Ivan is fast, acronis is the most flexible reliable tool in the bunch.
I also recently replicated a system with ghost for linux. It has nothing to do with Norton Ghost. Its a bootable cd-rom based Linux that replicates systems very nicely. Its not fast but it also works.
Another method.
If you have a server with Raid 1 mirroring of the boot drive, take the mirror drive out and use it to boot another sever of the same type off network. Change its hostname and ip address and WALA, you have replicated a server.
Nothing is as good as Ignite and I've agitated HP to port Ignite to Linux for 5 years now to no avail.

Re: how to take a golden image on linux
If you want a Linux recovery solution that supports LVM, I would look at Storix SBAdmin.
http://www.storix.com/
It does have a couple of (shall we say) features that need to be worked
around. But, once you get it figured out, there is nothing (that I was able to find) that is better for server recovery/installation.
It will also do backups...but, I use Data Protector as my daily backup
solution.
If you use Ignite-UX in a HP-UX environment, you will appreciate this product.
