Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
I think the problem is that the boxes have had a kernel patch applied using up2date and that the source for that patch doesn't exist on the server itself.
I'd like to get a second opinion on my error and some steps to resolve it.
The attachment has the results of hpasm start, and hpasm status plus my versions tacked onto the bottom of the file.
Thanks,
John

Re: Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
Some key things i found so far:
1 use the RHEL3 update1 version of OS software
2 use version 7.00 support pack for RHEL3 from here http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/18425.html
3 prereqs installed
gdk-pixbuf-0.18.0-8.1.i386.rpm
gdk-pixbuf-gnome-0.18.0-8.1.i386.rpm
gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-34.1.i386.rpm
kernel-source-2.4.21-9.EL.i386.rpm
libpng10-1.0.13-8.i386.rpm
ORBit-0.5.17-10.4.i386.rpm
4 current version gcc gcc -v gcc version 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-24) before you run the install701.sh
5 useful pdf install doc at ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/Linux/linux.pdf
Hope this helps! Most things are working, still can't get our MS windows IM7 server to discover this new (non windows) Linux server

Re: Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
Using port 2381 can view via web interface all the system board, memory, file sys use, exp boards etc. type info.
Haven't been able to get the Windows IM7 server to discover the Linux server yet!

Re: Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
I haven't been able to work on this issue lately. But I'll be setting up a lab server to test my problems here shortly.
I'll drop a note then on the details of the problems and any more information I can come up with.
The gist of it is at this point, agents worked on RH3 then kernel upgrades were ran. Now they don't show up any more.
I'll try to get back to this in the next day or so.
Thanks all,
John

Re: Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
Up2date currently loads kernel version (kernel-smp-2.4.21-9.0.3.EL) have downgraded to (kernel-smp-2.4.21-9.EL)
Found that the stock cpq_cciss-2.4.48-10 & cpq_cciss-2.4.48-12 are compiled for kernels 2.4.21-9 not compiled for above kernel.
The stock bcm5700 package is also compiled for kernels 2.4.21-9 not compiled for above kernel.
Also found a problem running hpasm, kernel panics, had to upgrade to latest ROM for our Proliant DL380, version 4.07A

Re: Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
The Redhat network only applys the Kernel patche when updating a kernel. It doesn't download the source tree. So you have to go back to Redhat, login with your RHN id and pick the kernels yourself. You can find what kernel a box is running by "cat /proc/version".
Once the source for my particular kernels were in place, the Insight agents would find the new kernel source and load just fine. Load might be an insuffient word but I'm not sure "recompile" is accurate either without going back and watching it happen.
All went well from there, except for one they snuck in that had a firewall enabled. But that is another story.
Thanks David for the pointer to the documentation. By far the best documentation on the Insight agents for Linux/Proliants that I've seen to date.
Thanks to everyone else who had suggestions.

Re: Insight Agents and RedHat Ent. 3
We are still running the Update 1 kernel
uname -r 2.4.21-9.ELsmp
We have locked the server so up2date doesn't change our versions.
make sure you are running the new gcc version before you run install701
gcc -v gcc version 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-24) If you were at a different/older version deinstall the hp stuff and reinstall.
ps We are running DL80 G3 servers, had to update to latest ROM Version: 05/01/2004
