Installing Fedora Core 5 on external USB Drive
I am a novice in the LINUX world and need of great HELP.. I have a HP nc6220 laptop..running win xp. I want to install fedora core 5 on the external usb drive and boot the linux os of the usb drive when i want to.. the laptop supports booting over the usb(checked it)..can anyone help me with the steps to be followed for the installation..please understand that I am pretty new to the linux world..help me please..

You could use a virtual machine software to install linux.

With the device attached, boot your system off the FC5 DVD or CD.
Run the installation, specifying the device as where you wish to install.
Your real issue here is that Windows does not support (easily) booting a Linux partition.
To pull this off you will need to use grub boot manager as your boot manager for windows. That will necessitate always having this USB device attached, or creating a parition on local disk large enough to hold grub.
You can resize your winows parition with knoppix or other cd based distribution like:
