Re: Is LVM needed ?

Is LVM needed ?

I have a Proliant ML350 running SuSE7.2. I have installed 2 raid arrays ( 2 disks and 3 disks ), and formated them with reiserfs.
Do you think I still need them to manage under LVM ?

Re: Is LVM needed ?

You don't need LVM but the whole thing is much more flexible with it.

LVM looks a bit scary when you first start looking at it but it really is very simple and well worth learning about.

Re: Is LVM needed ?

If you plan to add disks in the future without the need to mount them under certain directories then you should consider using LVM....

You don't need to.

LVM is howeve a great tool, that I'm, familiar with in HP-UX. Its a good choice.

You can do the job without it though.

Re: Is LVM needed ?

Use LVM with reiserfs if you have many dev, yes and event if you have plan for a very static environment, because you dont know what tomorrows need maybe and It just look complicated but once you have work it out you will forget about it, in fact I have to scan/read the doc to remind myself about various option when per chance i have to use it.

Re: Is LVM needed ?

Philippe,
I am stressing the same points previously said.

Its very easy to manage the whole disk spaces among partitions with LVM. If you think the size of the partitions will grow in future and in random manner you can go for LVM.
LVM is pretty stable in linux.

Re: Is LVM needed ?

I use LVM for personal needs and it's an invaluable tool. The only fact that I won't need to copy 21GB /home/p.fessel from one disk to another is one refreshing thing.

Also, Linux's LVM resembles very much that of HP-UX's; so (at least at this level) I can simulate some scary operations that I need to do at work at home.
