Olivier- Yes, I was at that site, then clicked on 'download' for the RPM self extracting file and ran into my problem.
I could be wrong, is the download supposed to be a text document like that?

When you open the download page -locate the raw:
Linux RPM in self-extracting file (info)
then click on corresponding link under JRE column- you'll be redirected to the agreement oage -click on accept. Then on the next page click on:
Download j2re-1_4_2_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin .
you'll download the bin file.
Then run:
sh j2re-1_4_2_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin
this will extract the rpm file.
simply install it:
rpm -ivh j2re-1_4_2_02-linux-i586-rpm
