kernel panic on ze4101

when trying to install either mandrake 9 or redhat8, I get a kernel panic at the same sport, when its trying to detect pcmcia cards.. im thinking its because its one of the newer models with a newer chipset than is supported, but I need a confirmation of it..

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

as far as i know, mandrake always had problems with pcmcia cards during the install.
just leave you pcmcia cards out during the install, and insert them when the install is complete and you are going to boot for the first time.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

I got the same problem for ze4101.

How to deal with it?

When I tried to install RedHat7.1. I found the power adapter is too hot. And the I do not know how to configure the X-window. Text mode works okey. But I could not boot into XP. when I run /sbin/lilo it said "partition entry not found". When I tried to install Grub /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda it said no bios something. I forgot.

Any ideas thanks.

Hi!

I got the same problem. Trying Red Hat 7.3.

If someone knows how to deal with it please let me know:

If not - I will have to return

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

OK, is kind of stupid to reply
5 minutes after my own post but..

In order to instlal Red Hat 73.
you need to give at the beginning linux nopcmcia option.

It allows to install but
it does not allow to use
PCMCIA.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

OK, again replying to my own popst. I got RH 7.3 runing.
No PCMCIA though.
Procedure:

1. install with
linux nopcmcia option given
at the beginning

2. during or after
installation give boot option
nomce

3. during or after installation
turn off pcmcia start on boot
through removing the
link from /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
or /etc/rc.d/rc3.d

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

well, the nopcmcia works, kinda anyway, now instead of getting that error; laptop freezes at the check cd windows

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

I can't say much more.
Works fine for me. And PCMCIA
should work with newest
pcmcia-cs. I've been just
watching "Friends" divx on it.
I also made a webpage:

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

I have the same problem, when I try to install Red Har 7.2, 7.3, 8.0. I noticed that when computer crashes while initializing PC Card, there is a message, part of which is "bank 3".One can see that under memory in sys info from 3DMark there are realy 3 banks memory recognized. Also SiSoft Sandra doesn't give any information about memory banks, but it says " Disabled host controllers are present. Check BIOS". Probably we have BIOS problem.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

u can get by that message by using "linux nopcmcia" when starting the install

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

Mike, the freeze problem is really not "freeze". It's actually the keyboard not responding. To install the system, you should specify "nousb" as well as "nopcmcia".

Also, after you have installed the system, before booting into the system. You should add a kernel option "noisapnp".

BTW, I have installed Redhat 7.3 and I can use the touchpad, even the scroll bar is working perfectly. But after I upgraded it to Redhat 8.0, the touchpad is still working but the scroll bar is not working any more. Anyone has any idea about that?

Also, I would like to try to add APM and PCMCIA support. Anyone could shine some information on that?

Thanks.

Jacek Pliszka, thanks a bunch for putting up all that useful info about Linux on laptops on your webpage. I found it very helpful, and will post your link to a couple other forums too.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

Yong Xi,
I had a couple friends say that they used the latest pcmcia-cs kernel to get their pcmcia working under redhat 8.0. I haven't tried it out myself, but will let you know what happens when I do so.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

Hi!

Well, I am during the tests
of newest stable kernel:
24.20-rc1 and newest stable pcmcia-cs-3.2.1. I will post
results to source forge
pcmcia forum here:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=757551&forum_id=7049

So far, nothing works and I tried quite a few things.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

OK,

I got reply from David Hinds
and it looks like it is faulty
BIOS so we have two ways:

1. Ask HP for fix

2. Ask Linux kernel people
for fix

David claims that problem lies
int he routing conflict - this
is relevant part of /proc/pci:

Intel ISA/OCU/CardBus PCIC probe:
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0a.0
IRQ routing conflict for 00:0a.0, have irq 5, want irq 11
02Micro 0Z6912 rev 00 PCI-to_Cardbus at slot 00:0a, mem 0x80000000
host optos [0]: [pci/way] [pci irq 5] [lat 32/32] [bus 2/5]

HP people, if any of
you are reading this lists,
pleas respond/do something
about it. We are your
customers.

BR,

Jacek

Did any of you succeeded in modem instalation?
I downloaded the driver from conexant.com link and it recognized the modem vendor and device, but when I try to run kppp it says "modem busy".

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

Do you all have O2Micro PCMCIA controller or problems are with
TI controller as well ???

I returned KA with O2Micro to store and ordered KB with TI.

To Ken Giusti: I can not
reply to your e-mail as my
e-mail to you
gets bounced with an error.
So if you want a reply - you need to give another e-mail address.

Short reply is: no,
there was no help from HP
at all. This quite unpleasant
as we want just a little - just PCMCIA working as
everything else does work.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

yes, i also have
O2Micro OZ6912 Cardbus conroller. same pcmcia problem.

HP sent a reply to my problem "We dont support LINUX"

I have a week to return my laptop. I am undecided.

By the way, anyone tried Suse 8.1???

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

I also have the ZE4101 and am considering returning it to HP, if they don't work out their PCMCIA issues.

Am I correct that Red Hat 7.0+ and Mandrake 8.0+ install properly on the "KB" unit?

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

How did you return it? Did you buy it directly from HP or through some retail store? I didn't buy it directly from HP and I'm not sure if I have to go through the retail store.

It's possible that KB version won't have the problem because both chipsets are Ali, while in KA one is Ali and the other one is ATi U1 (this one is very new). Also BIOS might be compatible with KB configuration.

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

Hi Jacek - you mentioned:

>>I returned KA with O2Micro to store and ordered KB with TI

How do I tell if my laptop is KA or KB? I've got a ZE4125...

All:
Has anyone had better luck with a KB?

I can return this laptop, but the store will demand a 15% restocking fee because the laptop is "NOT DEFECTIVE."

Yeah, not defective as long as you run windows....

...kinda surprises me. If we have a bad bios, why doesn't this problem occur on WinXP?

thanks for the help -K

Re: kernel panic on ze4101

I have a ze4145, and I've had the same problem installing Gentoo Linux after compiling the kernel. I've been able to disable the pcmcia checking, and have gotten as far as setting up Xfree. Right now, I can live without pcmcia, but I can't get my display working. Would anybody be so kind as to e-mail me their /etc/X11/XF86Config file?

For some reason, when I run 'startx', my display just blanks out and the caps lock and scroll lock lights on my keyboard blink.

Thanks,

Tim
