i've been screwing around with knoppix and i cant get my modem to dial, i went to my isp and got instructions to set up a connection and everything but I cant get it to connect, it just hangs at "initializing modem" Do i need drivers? a device file? is my modem not linux compatible? I really dont know,

Solutionwhat modem you have? there are so many winmodems available on the market (also called as softmodems) which are not supported in linux.
To find out whether your modem is supported in linux or not, try this link: http://www.linmodems.org/

If its a winmodem, linmodems.org is pretty much the only solution that will work.
Knoppix has fairly good hardware support, so your best bet is to get drivers for linux from the modem manufacturer.
