Re: linux cert vs other-- pls post your opions
I really think that certification is a proof of knowlege.
I know about linux+ and lpi certification, linux+ is very easy, and lpi certification could be very complicated, asking questions (sometimes) that are not relevant for day to day operations (in my oppinion). LPI definitivelly is more difficult, but if you pass it, probably will demostrate that you have solid knoledge in Linux.
Of course, I prefer Red Hat certifications, because is hands on and not just questions.
Now, the certification that you should choose finally also depends of the value of certifications in your country. Maybe, the other people does not know about the certification differences, and certifying one or other will not give you more benefits from the job perspective.
In my country linux is very used for Internet Service Providers and Internet Services. Also, there are some "mission critical" environments running linux, but this is a very small percentage.

Re: linux cert vs other-- pls post your opions
RHCE is the 800 pound gorilla in the Linux certification world. Its because RH has 61% market share and clones like CentOS and maybe Oracle Enterprise Linux add more share on top of that.
Simple market share.
Caution if you think proprietary Unix is going away though. Its not. Linux has serious Quality Assurrance issues and we're still opting for HP-UX for the largest, most important databases.
We're in Data Security here, specifically for Cable TV operators, conditional access.

Re: linux cert vs other-- pls post your opions
I'll take an RHCE exam this friday, and found the assesment tests on their site quite interesting (and not all that hard).
Getting certified also has a bad taste for me especially, so I'd rather go with a standarized certificate like LPI, as it proves real linux knowledge, not affinity with vendor-provided linux 'adjustments'. If You have the time, do both, LPI/Linux+ and RHCE and at least one or two RHCA tracks.
I'd suggest the whole RHCA, but some points like a whole GFS track seem not worth the money and time.

Re: linux cert vs other-- pls post your opions
as the RHCE is standarized I think it'll be recognized the same in most countries; I also noticed (though hillarious) that RHCA is quite unknown, while it requires a lot more skills than a plain RHCE it won't get You the same recognition. on the other hand, the RHCA covers many things needed in business environments, I think I'd rather add the RHCA than (basic) LPI certs.

Re: linux cert vs other-- pls post your opions
We develop many application based on a CA request under linux, using OpenSSL for certificate generation and CA generation, all using the smart-card support.
There is no problem for security from application side, developing using PIN for smart-card and password certificate.
The not-secure are the users. Forgot the smart-card into the readers and some PMI ask me to copy the certificate into file-system.
I have some docs for implementig the certificate and the smart-card reader.
Also, can use the smart-card to logon into the linux machines, not only with software developing.
Bye!
