Linux Update

If I have a minimum install of RH9. Can I insert the first install CD and do an install of an additional app like samba or kernel development tools, without effecting the system as it is?

Re: Linux Update

Yes, you can, it is normal procedure.
I guess you mean by affecting the negative affecting like demage rpm database. You don't be worry about it, all dependencies are automaticly solved before installation additional packages

Re: Linux Update

Hi Robert,

You can do it, but the configuration files you have modified will change, nevertheless the new configuration files that match you have in your current configuration will be renamed filename.rpmnew

Be carefull do not update more than one time before you have checked the old configuration files.

Re: Linux Update

Hello,

The best way to do this is :
1 - boot your installed RH9
2 - insert the first install CD
3 - launch a graphical utility named "redhat-config-packages".

However, be warned that the minimum install of RH9 may not include all necessary components to do graphical stuff. In this case, go to another fully featured Linux box, ssh as root into your minimal-RH9 box and export DISPLAY, before step 2.

Good luck,
