Loading Procurve MIBs to Linux

Hi everybody,

I would like to monitor various Procurve switches, create VLANs, disable ports on them ( some internal application ) and here
http://h40060.www4.hp.com/procurve/includes/software/index.php?cc=uk&lc=en&content=mibs-mar08

I found there many Procurve MIBs. These MIBs are in .mib format-extension.
In /usr/share/snmp/mibs/ on debian files are in .txt format, so now I am confuesed how to convert .mib --> .txt ? Is this necessary at all, have someone similar experiences and is willing to share them :)

Hints are welcome,

Thank you in advance,
Elko

Re: Loading Procurve MIBs to Linux

Hi Murali,

thank you for commnet. I found these links and I am wondering is conversion to .txt MIB format necessary.
This is little confusing with loading MIBs to linux for various hw, I suppose if I load all IEEE MIBs then all products out there will be covered.

Ideas are welcome,
Kind regards,

Re: Loading Procurve MIBs to Linux

Hi Elko,

I am not sure whether converting from .MIB to .TXT is required.
Generally MIB files will have a .MIB file extenstion.

Normally having a .txt in the end would mean somebody editing the file from a windows box and while saving the file, wrong option was used causing the editor to store the file in .txt format.

Re: Loading Procurve MIBs to Linux

Hi Murali,

I installed net-snmp and rest *snmp* packeges under debina and files in /usr/share/snmp/mibs are with .txt extension. Definetelly I think I never edited these files from windows machine.

I am going to try to load there files with .mib extension and will see what will happen, I was just wondering what is difference between .mib and MIBs in .txt format...is necessary to convert them in order to be usable, etc...

Thank you for commnet

Re: Loading Procurve MIBs to Linux

Hi Elko,

Residing in memory, MIBs are data structures that are constantly updated via
the SNMP daemon. The MIB configuration text files are located on your hard
disk /usr/share/snmp/mibs and loaded into memory each time SNMP restarts.
The Configuration text files will have the .txt extension.

Once you load the MIB's the corresponding configuration text file will get
created i guess. You can make use of the VI editor to look at the MIBs but dont
change them. Changing them could cause SNMP to fail.
