Re: Mailing in Linux

Do you mean a mail client i.e. a progarmme you can write and send mails in or do you mean a mail transport agent. If the latetr then sendmail is the standar but there are others as well, such as procmail.

If you mean a client I think it would best depend on which desktop you are using. There are hundreds of them!

Re: Mailing in Linux

There are a bunch of clients on the install cd's. All have advantages and disadvantages.

On the server side, sendmail is an old workhorse, but is repleat with security flaws that must be dealt with. The advantage is everyone uses it and there are lots of ways to tweak the setup.

Just explore the install cd and look for sendmail. rpm -i sendmail_version....

Re: Mailing in Linux

well SEP points out the issues with sendmail but this is really a question that you need to look into. What exactly do you want to achieve. Different agents had different strengths and weaknesses. The main advantage of sendmail here i sthat you can probably click a button somewhere within your distributions installer and have everything set up for you. the disadvantage is that you need to have your brain soaked in anti-feeze for a month if you decide you need to re-configure

Have a look at this page.

Re: Mailing in Linux

I've dropped sendmail a long ago. It's full of security holes and a pain in the a** to maintain.

I'm using postfix nowadays with courier-imap with excellent results. If your distribution is a recent one, they will be available for installation.

More documentation about Postfix can be found on http://www.postfix.org. Info on Courier can be found at http://www.courier-mta.org.

Re: Mailing in Linux

I am using qmail + spamassassin + courierimap + squirrelmail and it works beautifully. There was a lot of reading and playing before I could make qmail hum. The biggest hurdle with qmail is it uses Dan Bernstein's way of monitoring processes and moves away from the inetd superserver, and it can take a little getting used to. Courier was a pain to compile on solaris 8 but was a dream on a debian system. Squirrelmail is a great webmail tool if you need one, I have also had great success with imp both require a web server though ( it is webmail after all :). Mailman is a good mailing list manager with a web frontend if you need to manage lists.

If I had it all to do over I would probably go with Postfix though. It has a rich feature set and allows great control over mail delivery. Spam Assassin is great and Iw would say it is a necessity in todays email world.

I hope that helps,
