mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

Hello,
This is from one of my friend. He has an old HP workstation (hp-ux 10.20) with 2GB hard disk. You won't believe it does not yave a tape drive or a cd-rom. He needs to install some software which is a PC (downloaded from HP site) on the HP WS.
- What are the options
- He is currently trying to add a SCSI disk on the PC and install RH Linux on the same PC and trying to copy the files to the new hard disk. After that he will connect it to HP WS. But I am not sure it wiill work. If it is viable option, what should be the file system type on Linux. Can hp-ux 10.20 mount ext2 or ext3 file systems.

Pls advise.

Thanks.

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

As far as I understand it, there are no tools for HP-UX to mount an ext2/ext3 filesystem.

Your best bet is to use a FAT filesystem as a partition, and put the software that needs to be transferred on that.

Does the HP-UX workstation have any network cards etc. ? It would be the easiest way to transfer software.
One long-haired git at your service...

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

it would be better to transfer it via network. if he has another machine which is on the same network, use that machine to download the software and transfer it to hp-ux machine.

if not try using some compression utilities (zip) to compress the software and see if it can fit in to a floppy, if so transfer it via floppy (i hope the hp box has a floppy drive)

if not your only way is to transfer it through another hard disk. make sure the file system choosed on the new hard disk is supported by the hp-ux 10.20

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

Thanks for the responses.
Network is out of options.
Floppy also not there.
Only option is to use additional disk.

Is FAT partitions seen by hp-ux. I never had any chance to test this.

Or what are the FS types which is mountable onhp-ux 10.20

Thanks
Rasheed.

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

Hi Rasheed,

what about putting a nic on both machines, connect them with a cross cable and access the pc using nfs ?
I think that's the easier and cheaper way.

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

linux can read hpux disks, so you could mount the disk from the pc running linux when you attach it to it. the other way around will not work.

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

Thanks Dirk and thanks everyone. Dirk, this is what I was looking for. As I mentioned above, this is actually for one of my friend who is in a remote place and I cannot test it myself.

As Dirk said, if HP disks can be read by Linux, it is enough to attach it to Linux pc and get the software on the hpdisk and re-connect it to hp box. This is what I am trying to suggest to my friend.

Thanks
Rasheed.

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

Hi Rasheed,

mount command has an option to mount hfs filesystems, so it seems to be possible to mount hp-ux 10.20 partition on the pc.

Anyway, 2 nics and a cross cable solves your problem too.

Re: mounting Linux hard disk on hp-ux 10.20

I could not use any options. Looks like he screwed up the whole hardware. As I am going for a long vacation I close this thread.

Thanks for all.

Rasheed.
