Just run Xconfigurator and when it asks about the video config, make choose you pick General/Laptop LCD screen 1024x768. That should do the trick for you if you have a LCD/TFT screen.

They have lots of hints, tricks, configurations for setting up Linux on various laptops. They don't have the one you mentioned, but you might get lucky with one of the other HP models they have, the N5470 seems like a close match.
Also you can get the specs for the model you have from the HP web site:
