Networking Linux with Novell Sun and Windoze

I'm trying to get Red Hat 7.1 / Samba 2.0.6 to replace an ancient Novell server with a mixed set of clients from SunOS 5.6 through Win 95 to Win Me.
I know I should get Samba 2.0.7 for better Win 2000 support.
I'm also fighting password problems in Samba and wonder if Samba can support both encrypted and non-encrypted passwords for the same clients. All the FAQ's say 'you need encrypted for NT' but don't say if you can still run vanilla '95. Anyone know if Win 2000 and Win Me can be hacked to send plain passwords ?
So far i've got Linux running (I can telnet in OK from any client) but when I try and get it to be a workgroup master it complains that one of the Sun boxes is the existing master.
Anyone know if SunOS 5.6 has any traps which I need to discover before I demote the Sun box by tweaking it's smb.conf ?
