NTP offset keeps rising
Hi to all,
Wonder if someone could help a relative linux newbie...?
We've installed RHES4u4 on several HP bl35p's, however they seem to have trouble syncing to an HPUX NTP server.
The HPUX server has no connection to the internet to get a "proper" NTP time, but I have set the local clock fudge to be stratum 3 on the server and left it at 10 on the client.
Adding the NTP server to /etc/ntp.conf as usual and restarting ntpd I can see it listed in ntpq -p. However it never recieves a * next to the server, and the offset keeps rising growing to over 500 after a day.
If anyone could shed any light on what I may be doing wrong that would be great.
Thanks in advance
Phil

Re: NTP offset keeps rising
Shalom,
You monitoring this with ntpq -p ??
Few possible problems. HP-UX systems are notoriously bad at keeping time. To be the main time server it either needs access to a proper ntp server or local ntp server that gets time updates.
I believe the problem is coming from either a disruption of ntp, see the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file on the HP-UX box or the fact that the HP-UX server is having a hard time maintaing its system time. This could be due to the fact that the system clock works poorly or an actual system hardware problem.
use cstm/mstm or xstm on the hpux system to make sure its solid.
