Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

Hi, I am new here. I register into the forums because I have a problem with a new 380 G3 and I couldn´t resolve them. The server is out of the box and W2K runs ok on it, but Red Hat 8 have various problems with the server (they aren´t installed together). The NIC´s don´t work properly, go down without reason, and sometimes the server freezes without registering anything in the logs. These happens whit various kernels (including the latest one) and with de tg3 drivers and HP certified drivers. I installed the HP support pack 6.40 and the problems persists, the NIC´s duplicate packets, stop responding and the system freezes.
The NIC´s are both on the same net, but leaving one of them unconfigured I can´t resolve the problem.

Any idea?
Thanks, and sorry about

Re: Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

So what's it's current configuration? Tell us what the following detailsare:

Kernel revision ? Is it the redhat eratta kernel, or a fresh one from kernel.org?

HPASM drivers. Is the 6.40 pack still installed, and the 'hpasm' service started and running?

What do your network interfaces look like (do both 'ifconfig -a', and 'cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*' so we can see) ?

How many processors, just the one?

What RAID controller are you using, the onboard 5i or an additional card?

These details should enable us to help you further.
One long-haired git at your service...

Re: Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

Hi Stuart, thanks for the response. Well, here is my answers:

kernel revision: 2.4.20smp from Redhat Errata and the original shipped with RH8.

HPASM drivers 6.40, up and running.

etho - 10.20.253.102/255.255.0.0
MAC xx:xx:xx:xx:80
eth1 - 10.20.253.103/255.255.0.0
MAC xx:xx:xx:xx:81

I can´t give you the ifcfg scripts because I´m resintalling now, due to a failed experiment ;)

2 Xeon 2.8 Processors (...mmm maybe a APIC table problem???)

RAID 5i onboard controller, with 3 disks 36 Gb on RAID 5 configuration.

Thanks again for your response !

Re: Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

I am experiencing the same problem. We have an HP DL360 G3 with (2) 2.8 Xeons with 1GB RAM, and Windows 2000 Server runs fine, but Redhat 8.0 locks up at random times. It locks up even in the middle of us using it. Any ideas, please let us know.

Thanks.

Re: Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

Scott, finally I solve the problem. There are many issues with compatibility between HP chipsets and RH8. One of them is the APIC table, you must configure in FULLY MAPPED in the BIOS of the machine, and the other problem is the TG3 driver of RedHat 8, wich has an issue that has been solved on the 2.4.20 version of the kernel.
Resuming, you must change the APIC configuration and upgrade your kernel. You don´t install the HP drivers because I founded performance problems with de NIC´s.

Thanks very much for the reply, we'll try those 2 items.

Re: Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

Just finished doing those 2 things like you said, and that worked for us as well. Server did not freeze with Redhat 8.0. Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Problems with 380 G3 and RH 8

Fine!. My server is in production under heavy load since 55 days ago, and is running Ok. Was very hard to me to find a solution because this problem is undocumented at all.
Please contact me if any news appear in your server, or if you found another issue that can be potentially applicable to my server.
Regards..

Fernando.-
