The answer is probably yes, though you should do research so you know who provided the video card/chipset and the modem.
HP laptops are relatively famous for giving Linux installation/admins trouble getting started.
Before you start, make sure you do your homework and have linux drivers at the ready.

I do prefer to use Redhat as I am more familiar with the commands, and there are more things available in the US, however I can almost gaurantee that you will run into hardware issues with a Compaq/HP laptop. I have been running Suse for a long time, first on my old Pavillion N5430, and now on my NV400 widescreen, and Suse supports everything except the Winmodem.
On the wireless front 9.3 also supports Windows 2000/XP AES encryption rather than just WEP as Redhat does.
