RH8-->9

I built an RH8 system running SAMBA that is close to production but still in testing. We are going to use Arcserve for linux to backup the file systems. I had a real problem with mondo, getting it to run under RH8.

However since I upgraded to RH9 and I am now writing to CDrom, all my problems went away. Mondo works great for our DR needs.

So with this in mind, I need to upgrade our future production server from RH8, to RH9. Can anyone advise me of some watchouts? Is this transition from 8 to 9 pretty painless and safe for SAMBA?

Re: RH8-->9

I've done this upgrade, it is relatively safe for Samba. Its no more difficult than running the online update program. Samba worked before the upgrade, it worked just the same after.

There are general issues to think about.

If you are running apache 1.3 httpd server, the upgrade will be happy to upgrade the software. It leaves the task of converting the httpd.conf file to you. It essentially breaks a few applications like that, if you let it. They've dropped wu-ftpd as an option and any custom configurations you've done won't migrate to vs-ftpd.

I'd have a handy backup of that prodution machine and a test plan so that any critical processes don't slip through the cracks on this one.

Re: RH8-->9

Same advice. In fact, as you may have read elsewhere, RH 8 was to be kind of rh7.4 mix with RH9.0 beta. In other words, many things where to be improved, but many older stuff remained for compatibility. The result is that RH8 is not what I would call the best distro to leav with. You problems with CD is one example among others.

AFA RH9 is concerned, you'll be at ease on upgrading. Just one thing is graphical settings, choose carefully upon upgrade if you keep your screen and video card setting, as the redhat-config-xfree86 needs... X to run, which is quite silly (to be improved in 9.1).

AFA Samba is concerned, no trouble on upgrade.

SEP wrote a good migration tips on Apache 1.3 to 2.0, look at http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xb0c3d7d96cbad711900a0090279cd0f9,00.html
if you need.
If you use firewall, my advice is to build your own, and choose upon upgrade the 'no firewall option', so you know what you block and what you allow.
For ftp server, I prefer proftpd, as it's safe and its config file is close to Apache one, vs-ftpd is also a very secure option.

Sad for Mondo, I'm glad that you see it works well under rh9, Arcserve is sure a good product, but not the same price...
