RHL 7.3 - x quit working
Hi and please help!
ok a few weeks back I installed 7.3 and throught this group got the video working on my HP Pavilion 540n with the unfortunate SiS 650 video chipset. I was working on the system last night and all was well when I shut it down. Today I booted it up into Linux and logged on, typed the "startx" command, the screen flashes a few times with some text (no X windows) and then comes back to the log in screen . I cannot figure out why its not working. ANy clues on where to check? I did look in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file but did not see anything which pointed to a problem (at least that I understood).
clues ?
thank you!

Re: RHL 7.3 - x quit working
I captured the output of starting up X by "startx 2> /tmp/output.txt" and its shown below:
XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-8) / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 23 January 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.17-0.13smp i686 [ELF]
Build Host: daffy.perf.redhat.com
Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Wed Aug 21 10:45:37 2002
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
Total Adapter Bandwidth is 264M
Symbol DRIQueryVersion from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/sis_drv.o is unresolved!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!
***********
Again, this was all working yesterday, and when I boot up this machine under XP, the video works fine.
thanks

Re: RHL 7.3 - x quit working
All,
I found the problem. When this was happening I was loggin in as root. I noted that the .xinitrc file in the root home dir was 0 bytes long. Removing this file, fixed the problem.
regards,
