setting gamma w/ fx5 under linux

hi,

i need a function equivelant of the xgamma command to use with the fx5 card/driver under redhat linux (i'm running it under 7.3 which is unsupported but the problem extends to 7.1 and others.
when running /usr/bin/X11/xgamma
i get the following error:Xlib: extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display "lynch.dneg.COM:0.0".
Unable to query video extension version

i believe that is because the hp xserver does not support this extension.
does anyone know how i get can
work around this or alternatives to xgamma under my setup?
