smartd

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

My smartd service fails at startup time.

1) What does that service do?
2) What happen if I disable that service?

Re: smartd

if the server has sata disks, then you can disable smartd since sata does'nt support smartd atm.

Re: smartd

Best explaination is in

#Man smartd

but in short, smartd service monitors your hard disk for errors (if your hard disk have are smartd able ... most modern disk are ! beware the disk must also be smartd enable in BIOS).

so if the service fails could be you dont have smartd disk or they are not enable in "BIOS" or there is an error in /etc/smartd.conf, But have a look at /var/log/messages this is where error are normaly send !

What do you lose is service is not started ... well if your disk is degrading you will not know ...
