Re: splitting windows partition for linux installation
http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/knoppix/knoppix_tco.htm
Knoppix can be used, there are also other distributions.
Process:
Defrag windows, make srue there is a large, contiguous free space area.
Boot of Linux, reduce the Windows partition.
Boot off chosen Linux, let grub be your partition manager.
At boot, you will get to decidde between windows and linux.

SolutionYou can use fips ( it's included in utilities folder of older versions of RHL CD, otherwise you can download it from http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/
). procedure is same for all utilities- clean up the disk through windows, defrag it, boot through fips floppy, resize the windows partitiion, and then use the freed space for linux.
