Today, the system was hung and showed the following error message during starting. The customer tries to logon rescue mode, but cannot see any partition, such as /etc/fstab.

Mounting root filesystem

Unount /initrd/proc failed:2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 172K freed

Re: system was hung

Shalom ben,

Major hardware failure.

What have you done lately.

If this is nothing, you are probably in disaster recovery mode.

What type of system is it?
What version/distribution of Linux?

The more details the better.

Re: system was hung

Boot with the installation CD in rescue mode. Ensure that you can access to the disk partitions. You should run fsck to check for file system integrity if the disks are still accesible. You should focus on hard disks problems.

Have you runned something like up2date?

Re: system was hung

I suggest to check if someone changed GRUB configuration recently.
The other possible reason for this problem, as Ivan said, it's that someone upgraded kernel using up2dated, so 3rd party disk drivers don't work anymore.
