Trying to set vacation for sendmail

All I am getting this err when trying to set up vacation for sendmail:
-- Transcript of session follows -----
smrsh: vacation not available for sendmail programs
554 5.0.0 "|/usr/bin/vacation john"... Service unavailable

Does any one have any idea? Thanks.
