My tips:
1. Try to use the mt -f status command
for all tape devices, which configured on yout system.
2. Run the /sbin/stinit or somethning similar program.

do you have current drivers?
I've never heard of anyone hanging an Ultrium drive off a Linux box, but hey, its a SCSI device right?

we hang an ulterim off a linux box here in the office (NetServer LH3). No issues.
