unable to change root password

Hello,

I cloned a few linux boxed from the Acronis true image and I found out that I am not able to change the root password. When i try to change the root password, it told me:

changing password for user root.
PWplus: checking password for root
new password:
Re-enter new password:
passwd: Authentication failure.

when I checked the /var/log/messages, it is said the password has been changed by another process.

Anyone could help on this?

thanks

Shalom,

pwck
grpck

Check /etc/passwd /etc/shadow for problems.

You may need to very carefully delete and add the user back in.
