We are currently in the early stages of looking at moving to Linux. Can someone tell me what the limitations are for usernames in linux. Specifically things like length and special chars allowed.
P.S. We are looking at RedHat, I am not sure if it would be different for other implementations or not.
Thank you for your help.

Probably, you should consider the use of a Directory Service, like Red Hat Directory Services.
Login names can contain alphanumeric, -, and _. Maximum length is 256.
