Using Linux systems to load balance network traffice

Instead of using big-ip load balancer, I am looking for solutions to use Linux systems for the same purpose.

Are there any required software on Linux? and what are they?

Comparing to BIG-IP, what is pros and cons between these two methods?

Thanks very much for your advice!
