xw6200 workstation hard drive upgrade
I am looking at adding an additional hard drive to my dual xeon 3.4 GHz workstation.
At present I am looking at purchasing a Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII Hard Drive as the existing 160GB Samsung drive has filled up very quickly.
Will my machine support the new hard drive and will it run using the SATA II as I have noticed that there are relatively few SATA drives compared with the SATAII?
Thanks in advance

Re: xw6200 workstation hard drive upgrade
Note that the SATA standard organization prefers the name "SATA 3Gb/s" over "SATA II".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
says:
"SATA is designed to be backward and forward compatible with future revisions of the SATA standard."
I did not manage to find any document that would explicitly identify your workstation's SATA controller type or SATA version.
But this document would indicate that your workstation can take SATA devices with 3.0 Gb/s data transfer speed, aka "SATAII":
http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00786219/c00786219.pdf
So: yes, it would seem that your new drive would be supported at full speed.

Re: xw6200 workstation hard drive upgrade
Shalom,
It does appear your system will use it at full speed. You may need to update firmware to reach that potential.
