Cannot get past F10 ROM Based Set Up screen.

Have a Compaq presario 3000 notebook. The intro Compaq screen comes up and in the lower left hand corner the F10 Rom Based Set up comes up. Pressing F10 does nothing and cannot do anything else to the computer other than force it to shut down.

Hitting F10 should take you into the recovery partition. If nothing happens may I suggest to you that your Hard disk has failed. Try your hard disk on another machine to see if you can 'see' anything on it.

it does sound like you hard disk has gone. you can test it using a recovery CD e.g. Knoppix

http://www.knoppix.org

This is a linux based CD that will auto boot and if your hard disk is working it will show it. The program qt parted (located on the start menu) is very good and can help with fixing disk problems.

if you hard disk is recoverable you can copy the data off to a network or other attached drive if you have one

Re: Cannot get past F10 ROM Based Set Up screen.

There is no booting from cdrom if it is stuck at the F10 Rom Based Setup and you have not already set up the bios to boot the cdrom first. A bad hard disk will stop the post process in it's tracks right there.

Best to take the hd out, mount w/usb on a server and chkdsk /R. That will tell you the condition of the driver, and perhaps solve the problem.

This symptom will also occur if you have a USB hard disk or iPOD plugged into the usb socket when you reboot the machine. Make sure you remove the iPod prior to rebooting.
