what do you think about Omniquad Personal Firewall ?
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Omniquad-Personal-Firewall.shtml
this version above should be for free.
I was using ZoneAlarm Pro but I'm not happy with
it wasn't running stable and my WIN2000 SP4 was often hanging...
what kind of experience do you have with Omniquad Personal Firewall ?
could you recommend it ?
kind regards
chris

SolutionZone Akarm is easy, ZoneAlarm is easy to use but takes up too much resources. To avoid any performance problem, better I would suggest to go for ZoneAlarm SecuritySuite 5.5.062 and BitDefender Pro Plus 8.0.
But if we compare Outpost Pro 2.5, Omniquad and ZOneAlarm, I outpost Pro 2.5 is good, I use this for the one year and I found it uses very less system resources.

Re: Desktop Firewall
You can install the IDS(Intrusion Detection System) and the best IDS is BlackICE, to know the difference between IDS and Firewall,

Re: Desktop Firewall
if possible as freeware or opensource.
I hate ZoneAlarm.
I think, it needs a lot of performance.
and Omniquad Personal Firewall
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Omniquad-Personal-Firewall.shtml
should be for free, isn't it ?
only must pay for a PRO version.

No problems with other web sites!
Maybe it is temporary, if the url is correct. Have you tried it?

Re: Desktop Firewall
http://www.dingens.org/
It maybe used as addition to firewall, not instead firewall.

Re: Desktop Firewall
If you are using ADSL modem to get to internet, you can use a modem with router or modem and separate router. They have usually a NAT "firewall". It is quite good agaist incoming attacks. To this router you can connect usually 4 computers or network printers at same time and you can use files from other computer.

Re: Desktop Firewall
As Eino mentined it:
I have a DSL LAN- and WLAN-router with a firewall built-in.
Works great.
Last checks with Symantec as well as Gibson showed that there was no security hole.

Re: Desktop Firewall
but sometimes get viruses, trojans, adaware, browser-hijacker and other vermins.
I never open any mail attachmets on my computer
on my windows.
I open them only under linux.
I get them only through surfing and I'm using mozilla instead of Internet Explorer.
of course, sometimes I download files and install programs.
I'm using P2P filesharing and have vpn software installed to communicate with my company.
I have a mcafee virusscan enterprise 8.0.0 patch 11, but cannot prevent,
it can only find, delete or quarantine.
I think a desktop firewall isn't a bad thing,
but on many websites it will be dissuaded from using them.

Re: Desktop Firewall
I have router with NAT, F-Secure Anti-Virus Client Security and Win XP Pro firewall. XP has all possible updates. After I installed F-Secure, there has been no viruses, spywares, mallwares and so on. I use Exlorer and Outlook Express. I run adaware and spybot sometimes, but they don't find anything. I must aprove traffic to both directions. Nothing comes in or goes out so, that I don't know it.

I checked it, Win XP firewall is off. There is only that router hardware firewall and F-Secure client firewall.

Re: Desktop Firewall
and my WIN2000 prof. SP4 was often hanging.
I was using the PRO version.
Jetico seems to be very nice firewall and free for privat use:
http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/jpfirewall.htm
according to this test, should be better
than the newest Outpost firewall from Agnitum or ZoneAlarm Pro:

Re: Desktop Firewall
This URL has votes and recommends each of available personal firewall titled with "Which Personal Firewall do you use and recommend?"
Though ZoneAlarm east the system resource, it comes in top followed by Sygate and Outpost...
