Licence ROK - validation Windows VM

Romain

Hello everyone,

I'm configuring a Proliant DL360 for the first time with a ROK license for 6 VMs.

I installed Windows 2025 ROK (with the included CD) and validated the ROK license with the label sent by HP. This Windows acts as a hypervisor.

Now, this is where I don't understand. I have additional licenses to increase the number of VMs (6 VMs). I think the base license is a package and I just need to activate the license on the Hyper-V.

But I don't know if I need to validate the license on the HP website. I installed a trial version on the VM, but obviously the Windows license number doesn't work.

Do you have the procedure to know which Windows version I need to install (not Standard or Datacenter, but the ISO I need to download) and how to activate the Windows license on the VMs?

Thank you.

Re: Licence ROK - validation Windows VM

Hello @Romain64,

You’ve installed Windows Server 2025 ROK (Reseller Option Kit) on your HP ProLiant DL360 and activated it successfully with the license label provided by HP. That ROK license is valid and tied to the HP hardware, so there’s no need to register or validate it on HP’s website; that site is only for optional support registration. Since this Windows installation is serving as your Hyper-V host, it is already licensed to run two virtual machines if it’s Windows Server 2025 Standard, as long as the host is dedicated to Hyper-V only.

To run a total of six VMs, you don’t enter or activate anything extra on the host; instead, you assign additional Windows Server Standard licenses to the same physical server (each Standard license adds rights for two more VMs). This is a licensing entitlement, not a technical configuration. The ROK license key can’t be used inside the virtual machines, because OEM keys are hardware-locked to HP servers, so you’ll need separate product keys for each VM either from additional ROK packs, retail, or volume licenses.

For installing the guest VMs, use the same edition ISO as the host (Windows Server 2025 Standard), which you can download from Microsoft’s Evaluation Center, and then activate each VM with its own valid key.
