Microsoft Services For UNIX 3.0

As our infrastructure grows (and incorporates more MS stuff) and our IT staff remains small, I am considering implenting Microsoft Services For UNIX 3.0 to help integrate HP-UX 11.00 and W2K administration.

I would like to hear any issues or "hey, that's cool" items you have. I'd especially like to know if it's more trouble to maintain than it is worth. Are there alternatives?

I think I would wait until after the SCO IBM lawsuit is settled, because SCO claims that anything written to run on unix is "owned" by them, and then with M$ licensing unix from SCO, it just makes it more difficult to determine how to proceed. Of course these are just my opinions.

I found it difficult to use and scrapped it.

Instead we use diskaccess and diskshare.
I works perfectly and was simple to install and configure. Plus it's not a Mirco$oft product which is probably why it works so well.

Just set up Samba (known colloquially as CIFS/9000) and be done with it. The M$ tools, like everything else it produces, are overpriced even if free.

We use Citrix Metaframe for Unix here instead of eXceed or Reflection: t'is cheaper too. I love tools and systems that require NO maintenance.

agree, the reason it works so well its not a Micro$oft product.

I used a few features, one NIS master. works great.

other features that works well, is the NFS gateway and NFS client.

I have used most of the ported 1900 utilities. even ported some korn shell and unix perl scripts over to a windows 2000 server. small issues with my read statements, nothing major.

hey this thing even teaches windows how to finally be case sensitive. whooo hooo!!!

overall its a great product.

Anything that has 'microsoft' on the label...I tend to put on the brakes.

The other UNIX guy (he's MS certified-so he wanted to try it) here tried and seemed to get results..at first, then he changed his tune .... it's history !!

Put up Samba (the one that comes with the 11i install) and we have had good results. We're looking at setting up other boxes with Samba and have totally scraped the thought of using MS for UNIX.

We use the "ssod " server and accompanying PAM module to handle
password propagation between HP-UX and our
Windows domain servers.

This sub-system works well enough and is no
trouble to maintain... The only issue was the
server leaving zombie processes around - but this
was easily fixed ; since source code is provided.

Windows can be set up to propagate password changes to a list of UNIX imachines - ssod is the the server on the UNIX side that changes /etc/passwd /etc/shadow, or NIS.
