Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Mudasir:
Here are some ideas given in another Forum:

"If it's a PS2 keyboard, check the pins on the plug. Unplug it and plug it back in.
-Try safe mode. If you can log in, uninstall any keyboard device in device manager and reboot.
-Try booting up without the mouse plugged in.
-Try a different keyboard.
-If you have VPN or dial up software that has a custom GINA, try uninstalling it under safe mode."

Let us know whether this works.

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Plug the keyboard into a similar PC to see if the same behavior exists........

Also please tell us what the brand and model number is for this keyboard.

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Mudasir:
Have you tried switching off your computer, unplugging your keyboard, and booting up again? If it asks for a keyboard, just follow the prompts to install keyboard again.
PS. You might get more of a response if people see that you assign points :)

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Did the other two keyboards work?
If not then the keyboard port soldered into the motherboard would be bad. The pins might be OK, but inside case would be bad.

Which means you need a new motherboard.
swap for a new mthrbd............

I had a printer port break on me two years ago, and I had to swap the motherboard.

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Try USB Microsoft Keyboard they sold right now everywhere in black color, around $15
USB might work, as it uses different Chipset (in case PS/2 on board damaged).
Had you tried to reset BIOS to default?

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

What brand of keyboard? Is is a generic 102/104, or does it have extra buttons over the function keys? Is "scroll lock" on or off? Does it require a driver to get full functionality?

I'd just head to wally world and invest $5 in a new generic kb...

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Mudasir:
Sounds more and more like problems may have arisen when you started installing "...the new windows operating system." Thought might be given to starting over.

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Since your PS2 keyboard port is bad, try the USB keyboard, it might work.

Consider replacing the motherboard.
Then the PS2 port should work fine.

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Mudasir's opening post stated:
"i have a ps/2 keyboard which WORKS pretty fine until you get on to the login screen then it halts..."
In his third post, he states: "...the same keyboard WORKS fine in Linux and its not working in windows."
If we assume he is using the same computer, could this still be a bad keyboard port ... or, any hardware problem?

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Same thing happened to my system when I tried to boot XP today (1/7/2006 after receiving some MicroSoft express updates a few days ago. I have a dual boot WIN-XP or Linux system. WIN-XP keyboard quits working at WINDOWS LOGON prompting for password but LINUX works fine. My son in law suggested trying serial keyboard or using a USB to SERIAL adapter. I happened to have an old serial keyboard (date on the bottom was 1987) and with it was able to get past this problem. Next step was to go to MY COMPUTER -> Properties -> HARDWARE and see that the drivers for my USB keyboard were no longer there. Plugging in the USB keyboard resulted in WINDOWS finding a bunch of stuff missing which got installed straight away. REBOOT with USB worked just find. My guess is that MicroSoft updates were the problem but it is just a guess.

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Sounds very logical.........

If the USB keyboard does not work, reinstall the windows driver for it.

Try the USB solution, Mudasir

Re: my keyboard doesnt work in windows

Hi Everyone,

I am sure that the problem here is with the IRQ allot in the BIOS.

Mudasir: I request you to make the IRQ assigned for Keyboard as the prefered IRQ and make sure that no conflict is happening. Because Keyborad is hanging only when the OS is loaded up to Login screen which means when all the resouces of OS is coming in to picture it will try to use all the IRQ's available.

I wish if you could play with IRQ's, it will resolve the issue in a fashionable way.

Thanks,
