Advanced Server on Itanium?

I cannot remember where now, but I read that Advanced Server is NOT avilable on Itanium, or any VMS 8.x version. Is this true? Is there a replacement product that is not MS....

Re: Advanced Server on Itanium?

JK,

The Version V7.3A ECO4 supported on OpenVMS Alpha Version 8.2.

And HP PATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Advanced Server) is the one not supported on OpenVMS V8.2. It supports till V7.3-2.

Yes, No advanceserver for Itanium. Advanced Server is supported on OpenVMS Alpha systems only.

Re: Advanced Server on Itanium?

JK,

One more upcomming thing is that HP is in the process of investigating the use of SAMBA on Integrity servers for OpenVMS and this is due to some changes coming in the Microsoft Windows file system for which Advanced Server may not be suitable for accessing those changes in the file system. So in order to work around that problem, HP is taking a look at possibly using SAMBA as a way to access the new file system on Window systems. So this is something, a change that may be coming later.

For more information about Samba on OpenVMS/Itanium see http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/integrity/openvms_plans.html

Samba is coming to OpenVMS. Reportedly there will be no support for DECnet transport.

Re: Advanced Server on Itanium?

J.

During the Dutch Technical Update Days the was a whole session on the topic by Mr Pathworks himself: Brad McCusker.

The main reason VMS is forced to leave PW / AS is a change in policy by MS. They are definitely NOT going to license, nor disclose, any means of enabling PW - like access methods. (And that usually means: juridical actions against such use).
Therefore, Engeneering is forced to change to the "Open" Samba.
"In fact, MS may just pull the plug any time."
No use crying over spilt milk, that is just the way it is.

Sorry, no better news than that.

Proost.

Have one on me.

You actually figured it out? Darn, we must not have made it complex enough then... ;^)

Seriously though, if you are interested in field testing Samba on Itanium, send mail to Lawrence Woodcome at HP dot com. Lawrence is the product manager. "Evaluation" or Field test kit was supposed to be Dec, it might slip a bit.
