Backup Error
Help!!! What does this mean?
DBA_PPAS:PPAS01> init ppas01$mka100: ppasdb/media=comp
%INIT-F-CTRLERR, fatal controller error

(it means its your turn to be visted by the Bad News Fairy :-)
Basically its usually a hardware error unless the tape you loaded is incompatabile with the drive (like loading a DLT IIIXT in a TK87 drive).
What sort of drive and tape is it?
There may be useful information in the error log.

It's an SDLT tape. When i do a sho dev, this is the output I get
DBA_PPAS:PPAS01> sh dev mka/full
Magtape PPAS01$MKA100:, device type COMPAQ SDLT320, is online, file-oriented
device, served to cluster via TMSCP Server, error logging is enabled,
controller supports compaction (compaction disabled), device supports
fastskip (per_io).
Error count 4 Operations completed 44
Owner process "" Owner UIC [SYSTEM]
Owner process ID 00000000 Dev Prot S:RWPL,O:RWPL,G:R,W
Reference count 0 Default buffer size 2048
Density default Format Normal-11
Volume status: no-unload on dismount, position lost, odd parity.
