i downloaded the firmware for alpha ds10 from the HP site. I used iso bluster to extract the image and burned it on a cd. the system read a error as "not a bootable disc".

please advise as to how can i get the firmware. I already tested the cd rom and its working.

description what you downloaded.

Should I know what "iso bluster" is? Or what
"extract the image" means?

It shouldn't have been necessary to use "iso buster". Just follow the instructions on the HP site for creating your CD. It's possible the CD is a hybrid, which iso buster won't necessarily understand.

(for Steven's benefit, iso buster is a PC utility which can be used to diagnose or recover data from damaged iso 9660 CDs, or examine the contents of iso images).

Even better. Now I don't know what you
downloaded, I don't know what you did with
it, and I don't know what happened when you
did it. Could you possibly provide any less
useful information? (I don't see how.)

I first download the firmware from this site http://h18002.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/firmware/.

later I made a cd of the image that i downloaded and when i try to update the firmware form the cd, it says that the cd is not bootable.

i hope i have given the information u wanted

I just took a look at that webpage. I don't see an option for an ISO image to download. But there are easy step-by-step instructions on how tp update the firmware on a DS10.

So adarsh, which one did you try? I know if ISO Buster is your only tool all files are ISO images, right? ;-)

To make your own bootable CD only image (bootable DVD's are not supported), download the zipped .iso image (over 200MB) to a PC with CD writing abilities. Create your CD then boot the CD to update firmware on one of the systems listed on CD.

when u go to that site I mentioned, you will see that it gives a option of downloading the image file of the firmware, its a .iso file.

first I just burned the whole file as downloaded to a cd

second- i used the ios bluster and then burned the cd.

What is actually there is a zip file.

So, first you must unzip.

Then you must use a CD burning application that knows how to burn a disc from an .iso image. You can't just create a CD that contains the .iso file.

The .iso image is similar to a backup/physical, it can be used to make a "clone" of a data disc. It just does a sector for sector copy, so the image can be a copy of a 9660, ODS2 volume, or a HDS, etc., The burner doesn't know or care; it just copies the sectors in the order they appear in the .iso image.

This freeware has been recommended if you are using XP.

You are aware you can upgrade firmware from a local disk, assuming the AlphaServer DS10 box is mostly working, right?

As for the CD-R/RW approach, swap CD-R/RW drives and swap media, and ensure the steps being followed here are the correct ones. Without the sequence of commands and the tools and the details here on what exactly is transpiring, I'm going to make the leap that this sequence involved Windows here, and quite possibly Nero to burn the CD-R/RW disk.

My first suspect here would be latent errors with this combination; various versions of Nero I've encountered are not able to correctly burn raw disks. CDburnerXP Pro is a free package that does quite well in this regard, and can burn raw disk images on Windows boxes.

If this is Mac OS X, Linux, OpenVMS or another platform, the specific command sequence and the particular tools can vary. (Yes, current OpenVMS can burn disk images, too.)

Give me a simple answer to a simple question,
