max files for Open VMS

I have installed my new HSG80 with our new large raid sets. I cannot figure out how to increase the max_files allowed. my total space is
1433022245

i have tried to do an init/max_files=2000000 and it takes the command but the max files still only shows
1043716

I understand that openvms 7.3.1 can take up to 16m files on a disk.

Did you change the CLUSTERSIZE with INIT for the drive?
Check out HELP INIT/MAX.

It explains is requires at least one cluster (of blocks) per file is expected (perfectly reasonable no?!) so max files is limited to the number of clusters which defaults to 1M.

You may want to read up (google, itrc,...) some on on large disks before commiting. For some applications you are better of with a few smaller disks/partitions for specific purposes like very many smallish files.

Don't forget to look up using LDdriver too. See here: http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/journal/v6/disk_partitioning_with_lddriver.pdf
